National Electrical Code Article 410-57(b)

Receptacles in Wet Locations:

A receptacle installed in a wet location where the product intended to be plugged into it is not attended while in use shall have an enclosure that is weatherproof with the attachment plug cap inserted or removed.

In other words, The National Electrical Code requires an “In Use” Weatherproof Enclosure for any exterior cords left unattended or plugged in overnight. Also Refered to a Bubble Cover.
